Certifications
There are a couple non-GMO certification authorities:
Seal | Name | Notes | Website |
---|---|---|---|
Non‑GMO Project. | Created in 2007 by two grocery stores, The Natural Grocery Company in Berkeley, California (not the same as Natural Grocers) and The Big Carrot Natural Food Market in Toronto, Ontario. They are the most-recognized authority in North America. | https://www.nongmoproject.org | |
International Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) Evaluation and Notification Program. (IGEN TM ) | Launched in 2016, its aim is to verify label claims about the presence of GMOs in products and ingredients. | https://info.nutrasource.ca/igen-testing-and-certification |
There have been some differences between the two pointed out. See: Whole Foods’ acceptance of IGEN TM non-GMO certification for supplements criticized by Non-GMO Project
What Certification Does Not Address
Note that a product with a Non-GMO certification does mean that it is free of chemical residues such as glyphosate and other herbicides. For the most part, it merely addresses the presence of bioengineered ingredients, although the Non-GMO project certification does prohibit synthetic pesticides.
