During the early days of the pandemic, medical officials were very emphatic that you should NOT wear masks.
Then later on, without any change in the scientific understanding, the 'official' spokespersons got together and decreed that you MUST wear masks.
Any dissenters were quickly shut down, even those who were obviously more qualified to comment.

Nearly all studies in the past and present that show that cloth masks are not only useless, but probably worse than useless against viruses, because:
- There is no way they can filter out particles as small as a virus. It's like putting up a chain-link fence around your yard to keep out mosquitoes and gnats.
- For the less common method of virus particles transmitted via water droplets, the masks break the droplets into smaller units, allowing them to linger in the air longer and travel much further distances.
- Mask makes it much more difficult to expel carbon dioxide (which lowers health via a number of mechanisms), provides a warm moist breeding ground for bacteria, and promotes various oral conditions such as gingivitis, tooth decay, and bad breath.
- A new study from Denmark published it the Annals of Internal Medicine (it was rejected by 3 other journals, apparently for political reasons) found no significant decrease in COVID infections by people wearing masks. The authors also suggested that their results would make sense if the virus spreads via the aerosol method (as opposed to droplets), something that has not yet been definitively decided.
- A study from the National Institutes of Health published in November, 2020 found facemasks to be not only useless, but probably harmful. With the pores of the mask being roughly 1,000 times larger than the virus, the only real impact the masks will have are those listed in Table 1, below.
