Many state governors directed nursing homes to accept COVID-19 positive patients, resulting in the deaths of thousands of other patients in those facilities. In at least one case, the directive was associated with a financial benefit to the governor, in the form of campaign contributions or kickbacks from nursing homes who benefitted from the higher bed count. It is unclear if those nursing homes benefitted in the long run, as their patients started dying off in large numbers. |
The elderly, especially those with multiple health problems or on certain high-blood pressure medications, are much more at risk for death, and should be kept away from infected persons. |
