A new COVID vaccine has been produced by the Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine that uses a more traditional, non-mRNA approach. The research and development began about 10 years ago for coronaviruses in general, and has been adapted to COVID-19 using a strategy similar to the one used to make existing Hepatitis B vaccines.

Human trials have already been done successfully. The low-cost vaccine is targeted for poorer, high population countries such as India, which has already authorized production of 100 million doses.

I doubt that it will be approved for use in the United States, since that would undoubtedly destroy the potential fortunes of many mRNA vaccine investors.
