On Saturday night on April 13, 2013, a Dayton retail store owner was in a back room of his business with his 28-month old son when he heard his wife scream from the front of the store. He rushed out to find a 26-year-old man with a gun demanding cash. When the man saw the store owner, he turned his gun toward him and fired. Fortunately, the bullet missed; the owner drew his own gun and fired twice at the robber. One of those shots hit, and the gunman died as he tried to escape the store.

The store had experienced at least two previous attempted robberies, during one of which an employee would have been murdered if the criminal's gun hadn't misfired.
