Examples of PFAS
The two major classifications are determined by the amount of fluorine saturation:
- Perfluoroalkyl Substances: All the carbon atoms have at least one fluorine attached.
- Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: Not all the carbon atoms have a fluorine bond.
Some of the better-known types of PFAS are:
- Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS)1
- Perfuorooctanoic Acid (PFOA or C8)1
- Perfluorohexane Sulfonic Acid (PFHxS)
- Perfluorononanoic Acid (PFNA)
- Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE or Teflon)
Notes:
1 PFOS and PFOA have been phased out in the United States, but may be in use in other countries.
