Wi-Fi
A Wi-Fi router is one of the worst sources of EMF radiation you can have in your home.
Wi-Fi is a radio wave communications protocol used to link devices to a local network without the need for wired connections. It is extremely prevalent in homes and business, thus most people are exposed to the related EMF radiation almost continuously, both from Wi-Fi routers and the devices (such as phones or computers) to which they connect.
What most people don't know is that a typical Wi-Fi router uses the same radio frequencies as microwave ovens. The differences are:
- A microwave oven is shielded to keep the radiation inside the oven, while a Wi-Fi router broadcasts signals througout the area, normally the further the better.
- A microwave oven runs for a couple minutes to heat up the food inside. A Wi-Fi router puts out a much lower strength of radiation but runs constantly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While you're unlikely to get heat blisters from your Wi-Fi router, there is much opportunity for the more subtle effects on neuron and other body cells.
Microwave Ovens
In the United States, microwave ovens are not permitted to leak more than 50 watts per square meter at a distance of 5 cm from the oven. That seems like a lot to me; consider the amout of energy required to light a 50 watt incandescent light bulb, or the heat produced from it. My kitchen microwave leaks about ½ watt.
A typical Wi-Fi router might put out about 1/10th of a watt, though the strength decreases the further you move away.
