Declassified Documents Link U.S. Bioweapons Program to Lyme Disease Outbreak
A report from Dr. R.W. Malone describes numerous government involvement in bioweapons research, many of which appear to have backfired to afflict the U.S. population. Much of the information has been suppressed for decades.
Some of the revelations of the documents and interviews with persons involved:
- Disease-infected ticks were air-dropped on Cuban sugar cane workers in an attempt to destabilize the Castro regime. The program was halted after changing wind patterns made targeted drops difficult.
- More than 280,000 Lone Star ticks (made radioactive) were released across Virginia to track bird migration routes. That species of tick soon began to appear in northern areas such as Long Island for the first time.
- The scientist who identified the bacteria responsible for Lyme Desease had also found another component in Lyme patients' blood, known as the "Swiss Agent", or Rickettsia helvetica, which causes a worsening of Lyme Disease. That information was suppressed; many believe that as a result, patients were given inadequate treatment.
- A program that began in 1962 to breed hundreds of millions of fleas and mosquitoes as part of a bioweapons program lasted until 1974. That program was "categorically denied by the military" until the year 2000, when it was finally acknowledged after a CBS News investigation.
- The Plum Island Animal Disease Center conducted outdoor experiments using "tick nurseries" of varying species. The facility is 13 miles from Lyme, Connecticut, where Lyme Disease was first identified.
