What Happened to Zika?

2½ Minutes

Do you remember from just a handful of years ago, when everyone was so worried about birth defects from the Zika virus? Zika (transmitted by mosquitoes) was said to be associated with microcephaly, a congenital underdevelopment of the brain and cranium, causing an abnormally small head in babies and associated neurological problems.

Pregnant women were warned to stay away from Zika hot spots, which included portions in the Eastern United States. The Zika virus was called a global health threat by the NIH, and there was much panic about it for about a year.

Then, as suddenly as they had appeared, the birth defects stopped. The millions of dollars of research money that had been pouring in to find cures suddenly dried up, and few people did any official work to explain the phenomenon.

This video gives the most plausible explanation I've seen to date by far, and also explains why you hear nothing about Zika anymore.
