Introduction

The premise sounds reasonable enough: Expose healthy people to a weak infection that they have not yet encountered, in order to program their immune system to immediately deal with it when exposed again in the future.

The intricacies and remaining mysteries of the immune system, however, make the whole practice of immunization fraught with pitfalls. The complexity of the human immune system has been described as second only to the nervous system. But that doesn't stop people from attempting to use what they think they know in an attempt to alter its function enough to create a specific outcome, however misguided that may turn out to be.
