Treasure Hunting
Some notes about treasure maps:
- Treasure maps have been found while digging, flattening, or leveling dirt, surface mining, tunneling, hunting creatures, and fishing.
- You can use your compass on a map to get an idea of the direction of the treasure. Use the chart below to judge distances.
- Once you find the correct spot, activate your shovel and select the "Dig for treasure" menu from the map itself. Don't try to dig the ground directly.
- Once you dig up the treasure, you will likely be ambushed by the treasure guardians. Be prepared! The higher the map quality, the better the treasure, but the tougher the mobs.
- Occasionally, a treasure may require a large cart to transport. Once all the treasure has been removed from the chest, the chest will disappear.
| Message Sample | Distance (in tiles)* | Map Offsets for intercardinal directions** |
|---|---|---|
| You are practically standing on the marked spot! | 0 | 0 |
| The marked spot is in front of you a stone's throw away! | 1-3 | 1-2 |
| The marked spot is in front of you very close | 4-5 | 3 |
| The marked spot is in front of you pretty close by | 6-9 | 4-6 |
| The marked spot is in front of you fairly close by | 10-19 | 7-13 |
| The marked spot is some distance away in front of you | 20-49 | 14-34 |
| The marked spot is quite some distance away in front of you | 50-199 | 35-140 |
| The marked spot is rather a long distance away in front of you | 200-499 | 141-353 |
| The marked spot is pretty far away in front of you | 500-999 | 354-706 |
| The marked spot is far away in front of you | 1000-1999 | 707-1413 |
| The marked spot is very far away in front of you | 2000+ | 1414+ |
* Note: These distances are given in a direct line to the treasure using the length of a tile edge, and are accurate for strictly cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) from the map reader.
** But if the direction is more toward one of the intercardinal points (NE, SE, SW, NW), the map coordinate offsets will be somewhat shorter. For example, if you're facing South and the distance to the treasure map is 200 tiles ahead and to the left, the actual x and y offsets on the map from your current location would be closer to (141, 141) per the Pythagorean theorum: the square root of (1412 + 1412) is approximately 200. (And you thought you'd never use it!)

For approximate 45 degree angles though, it's probably easier to calculate the x and y offsets by multiplying the distance by the sine of 45 degrees, or .707.
Keep in mind that the messages are not likely exact, probably varying ±22.5 degrees either way, so any of these distances are just approximations.
Helpful Tip
When you get a direction from your map reading, you can narrow the direction down a bit by turning about 20 degrees and reading it again. For example, if you're facing north and the treasure is "in front of you" a certain distance, that means it could be NNW, N, or NNE because of the imprecision. For longer distances, you may need to decide which way to go around a land mass to your north.
By turning to the right 20 degrees, take another reading. If it still says "in front of you", that means it is either N or NNE. If it says "in front of you to the left", then the treasure is NNW of your position.
