Toxic Effects
These chemicals have not been studied extensively, and they are covered by few, if any, regulations. There appears to be very little enthusiasm to uncover any dangers. But some research has been turning up indications of harm such as:
- Disruption of the endocrine system — they affect your hormone production and/or effects on your body.
- Immune suppression: Studies have found lower level of antibodies in the blood as PFAS concentrations increase.
- Kidney cancer.
- Testicular cancer.
- Liver problems.
- Thyroid issues
- Reproductive problems.
- High blood pressure during pregnancy.
- Low birth weight.
- Birth defects.
- Cholesterol level changes.
- Change in the timing of puberty onset.
They also appear to bind with blood proteins (albumin) under certain pH conditions, though I'm not sure of the significance of that.
