Bisphenols
Bisphenols are an industrial chemical used in the manufacture of plastics to strengthen and provide flexibility. The most well known and studied type is Bisphenol-A (BPA), but more variations (BPF, BPS, etc.) are being used as problems with BPA are being uncovered. Unfortunately, we are finding that those variants also have similar problems; it's just that they have not yet been scrutinized as much as BPA.
BPA can leach into food and liquids, especially at warmer temperatures. It is extensively used in:
- water bottles
- baby bottles
- the protective epoxy coating used inside food cans
- polycarbonate tableware
- food storage containers
- thermal paper receipts - you can absorb the chemicals through your skin just by handling them.
- composite (white) dental fillings
Toxic Effects
These chemicals are endocrine disruptors, which mean that they interfere with hormonal actions in your body. Problems include issues with:
- growth
- cell repair
- fetal development
- energy levels
- reproduction
