Suntans

Let's take a look at how ultraviolet light is involved in the suntan process. Visible light and the closest wavelengths such as infrared and ultraviolet interact readily with the top layers of the skin and do not make it much deeper. So all of their energies are expended there.

Some energy is converted to heat of course, some may damage some skin components (resulting in sunburn), but some also strike the melanocyte cells. The melanocytes capture this EMF radiation (more on this later) to convert it into energy which accelerates the cells' activity, resulting in production of melanin and hence creates the suntan.

In this case, the response is a natural reaction that makes melanin, which will convert sunlight to heat instead of permitting damage to the skin.
